Serving God

Posted by Kevin_A_Perkins On January - 25 - 2010

Why do make things so hard sometimes? All around the world today people are saying I want to serve God but I can’t because of this or that. Some people say it’s too hard or they’re just not strong enough to. In reality though we all could use a thousand reasons or as I call them excuses of why we can’t serve God. There are a thousand reasons why we can serve God too though. Let’s look at what God’s word says about it:

Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do ALL things through Christ which STRENGTHENS me.”

1 John 4:4 says, “Ye are of God, little children, and have OVERCOME them: because GREATER is He that is in you, than he that is in the world”

Romans 8:37-39 says, “37 Nay, in all these things we are MORE than conquerors through him that loved us.  38 For I am PERSUADED, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to SEPERATE us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Isaiah 40:31 says, “But they that wait upon the LORD shall RENEW their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and NOT be weary; and they shall walk, and NOT faint.

Psalms 27:1 says, “The LORD is my light and my salvation; WHOM shall I fear? the LORD is the STRENGTH of my life; of WHOM shall I be afraid?

Do you see just a few of the reasons we have to serve God in the scriptures above?  It’s time we stop listening to the devil and the world. God is speaking LOUDER if you’ll just choose to listen to Him. …Let God be true and every man a liar… (Romans 3:4).

Serving God is much easier when you realize that it is a choice you can choose to make. If you have a job, you make an active choice to get up and go to work each day. Why not make serving God that easy? It can be if you decide to let it be. One of my favorite scriptures in located in the middle of the Bible and I know it wasn’t an accident:

Psalms 119:105 — Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Let His Word guide you. If you face a day where it’s seems hard to serve God turn to His Word for guidance. I know that even I’ve been guilty of saying serving God is hard, but is it really? Nope, because once you’ve tasted the blessings and goodness of God, it’s a lot harder to not serve God.

Today’s Challenge: I challenge you today to stop thinking about why you can’t serve God and start focusing on why you can serve God. Find scriptures in God’s word like the ones above that encourage you and let you know you can serve God. There’s no better life than serving God so if you’re not serving Him, why not start today?

Ask For Help

Posted by Kevin_A_Perkins On January - 4 - 2010

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalms 46:1

Personal experiences are sometimes the best material for devotions, so even when it’s embarrassing like this I will still share things like this:

Yesterday morning, I got to church early and had some things to unload. I decided it’d be easier to just pull around the back of the church and then unload them there. So, I just went down beside the church and preceded to pull around like I’d did about 40 or 50 so times before but this time there was some mud that I couldn’t see from the distance. I stopped as soon as I realized it was there and put it in reverse but started spinning immediately. Naturally, my instinct to just put it in drive, gun it and do a 180 to get out kicked in. Well, with a Toyota Camry it doesn’t work that way. I tried. Long story short though I was really stuck now and there was no way out. One of our Elders, Kendall had a big GMC truck with mud tires and came to get me out. After a series of events that I’ll leave out, he got me pulled out. Here’s a picture of our Camry afterwards just for a visual:

I realized through this that I’ve been doing what I did in this situation in some areas of my personal life. I’ve been serving God for quite awhile so I think that I know what I’m doing. So when trouble comes, I think I can handle it.  In reality though, I’m just spinning my tires in the mud. The thing that really hit me viewing this spiritually though is the fact that when I realized I was stuck and there was no way out I asked someone for help. I thought to myself if I’d just be that way spiritually, my life would be so much easier.  Instead I just keep trying to fix situations and problems that I know there’s nothing I can do to fix them. While God is right there saying I can help with that if you’ll just ask for My help.

That’s the focus today “Ask For Help”. In my situation, I knew there was no way I was getting out of that mud without someone’s help. Use that to think about some of your personal situations or problems. Are there things in your life you’re trying to fix but deep down you know you can’t fix them? Ask God for His help. He loves you and cares about everything that concerns you. Don’t make Him stand back and watch you struggle when He can help you if you just ask.
